Whisky distilleries are going green
...and it has nothing to do with envy!
The industry is using a £10million government grant to partly fund a switch from fossil fuels to low-carbon options as part of the nationwide drive to curb harmful emissions and reduce global warming.
It’s hoped that if all of Scotland’s 133 malt and grain distilleries support the initiative it could cut harmful emissions by almost half-a-million tonnes of CO2 ever year – the equivalent of taking 100,000 cars off the road.
The Tomatin distillery near Inverness - part of the £160m investment programme in renewable across five sites in Scotland - has installed a pellet-fuelled steam boiler for its production process, cutting the need for heavy fuel oil, reducing its carbon footprint by over 4,000 tonnes.
Some might say that the initiative is the start of the green SHORTS of recovery!
